A personalized way to taste and learn about different whiskies.

I approach my whisky tasting events with the philosophy that whisky enjoyment is subjective and dependent upon an individual's palate. I will not suggest that one type of whisky is better than another, and I do not buy into a traditional approach to whisky drinking.

I like whisky…not only for the taste, but because I love the story that inevitably goes with it.

I initially enjoyed whisky as an occasional change to the usual beverage I had while with friends. However, after visiting Scotland the first time, learning how it was made & how small changes in the process affected the flavours so significantly that I was truly hooked. I have a passion for learning as well as teaching, and whisky is one of those topics that can seem inaccessible.

I had lots of questions when I started digging into the topic for which I now have answers…

• What is a dram?
• What is the difference between Scotch & whisky? What about single malt scotch?
• Is an expensive bottle worth it? Is it really that much better?
• How do different casks influence a whisky? Does it really make a difference?
• How do I choose a whisky I might like when I’m staring at a sea of labels on the shelf?
• What one should I buy my Aunt or Brother-in-Law or manager for that special occasion?

My goal when I led my very first tasting was to help demystify the topic, to share what I knew, to answer questions and to help my friends find something they liked. I’ve now traveled to many distilleries (even worked for a short stint at one), taken courses, and built up a few shelves of whisky literature in my library. I’ve even tasted a few…all with a mind to finding a way to explain it in an easy-to-understand, visual, and accessible way.
